A spalling brick is when the face of the brick pops off brick or if the brick starts deteriorating. It is caused by the brick absorbing moisture then freezing, expanding and contracting, causing the brick face to break off and deteriorate.

It's common to see older mortar in between bricks start to crack or crumble. It is primarily caused by moisture that seeps into the porous mortar, then freezing and expanding. The process to fix this is called tuckpointing— which involves grinding out bad mortar joints with a 4" diamond blade about 1-2" deep and installing new mortar that patches the other mortar on the house. We use type N mortar.

Yes, you can cut out an individual bad brick where needed by using a cement saw cutting the mortar joints above and below brick, using a chipping hammer removing brick and mortar around brick, installing a new brick, and tuckpointing around it.

Yes we seal all of our work, brick is porous, so it absorbs moisture, We use a siloxane based weather guard which absorbs into brick creating a moisture barrier. This allows water to bead off of brick instead of absorbing into brick— protecting it from the freezing expanding and contracting effect during the  winter season.
